An Interview with Jay Sah on MyCeiling

Jay is the founder of MyCeiling, which provides a dazzling array of next-generation ready-to-fit smart ceilings that are tech-driven and easy to install.

Mounika: Jay, how did you meet Rohit and became partners to pitch in the market?

Jay:  Myceiling Pvt Ltd was incorporated in 2016 after leaving my job at Livspace.com and decided to start a new venture with full-time efforts. Continuing with infrastructure setup, prototyping, and vendor alignment, I was in need of funds. It was quite difficult to raise funds due to demonetization but I tried my luck many times even on Facebook groups. Then I found Rohit who recently left his job and was planning to start his own venture came across this Facebook post and connected with me for further discussions. After 1 month of thorough discussions, both found similar synergies and mindset towards building an innovative brand to disrupt the home décor market. Both were willing to take a risk and give it full-time effort whereas I was also looking for a co-founder with investment who could join full time.

I being a NIFT Bengaluru graduate started my career with a freelance designer, turnkey interior projects and then 2 years of the job at Livspace.com. Consistently exploring the market to dig out what customers actually want which they could not find anywhere, key reasons and R&D to resolve those issues.

Rohit also had a similar story. Rohit Kumar R — Postgraduate from Alliance University, was previously working as a financial Associate in a startup and also owned a themed café in Bangalore which was one of its kind in India, Joined MyCeiling as Co-founder. Working with few well-known startup companies like Swiggy, Runnr & MoonFrog analyzing their financial and accounting issues Rohit decided to take up the challenge and joined Myceiling to show his creativity after 5 years of observing startup companies.

2017 was the year where we came together to set up the company, aligned process and were all set to hit the B2B market. Now we have grown to a team of 9 members heading towards product diversification and technology advancement.

Why do you think that your new product FanPRO is going to be a disrupter in a false ceiling, fan, and lighting segment of the home decor market?

Our FanPRO is the most awaited and demanded model by the new house owners, interior designers, and architects. As you can understand from its combined features designer ceiling, light automation with center ceiling fan, it is first such multifunctional product in the market which will effect 3 market segments simultaneously i.e; false ceiling, lighting and fan market in home décor. Being a multifunctional product, it eliminates the need of dealing with multiple vendors where it takes a lot of time and effort-full of hassle starting from design development and selection, vendor dealing, quotation, installation, and finishing which takes weeks of time. MyCeiling FanPRO is online and can be installed within 45min on-site in front of the customer. This is what we offer and are specialized in and this is what people prefer.

What is the big problem it solves and how, why it’s needed?

The first Problem statement which FanPRO solves is the light flickering issue caused due to fan blades movement when there is a ceiling light with under fan. Hence there been no single brand coming up with such a concept of designer ceiling light which is bigger than the fan diameter. The existing solution in the market is a ceiling fan with under light which is never sufficient for space as well as gypsum false ceiling work where you can have downlights/recessed lights but being an onsite time-consuming work, people need a substitute. Hence, here we solve three problems with a single multifunctional product that comes in a single package. Online ordered, home-delivered and instantly installed- this is need of this new generation of house buyers as well as designers & architects.

What are its patented features and how it helps your business?

The product is designed smartly with a unique distribution of light rays being un effected by the fan blade movement. The unique fan provision module despite which the light product remains sealed safe from pests is the most desirable feature. Huge size FanPRO looks stunning with its design customization options where people may not need the gypsum false ceiling or another lighting source arount at all. With a single multifunctional product when we can cater to clients looking for lighting, fan or false ceiling, it clearly shows how scalable the products and business model is. IPR has been always our core and that’s our foundation of the thought process for developing our business as think of global expansion.

How many varieties and designs are being offered, how about similar products in the market?

Since FanPRO is our 3rd model in our product line which has one standard size slightly bigger than a standard ceiling fan. Initially, 50 designs with 4 types of light combinations are offered which means 200 unique SKUs. This also includes an advanced multicolor lighting system. Down the line, by year-end, we will also offer more size options so that homeowners and interior designers get more freedom while designing their homes with MyCeiling.

Similar products in the existing market can be decorative fans with under light (where brightness is not sufficient), fan with larger light design and retractable blades (where the size of the light design is limited to half of the fan diameter) and bladeless fans (which is nowhere solving the need of lighting and false ceiling design). To be specific, these are not really a competitor of our grand size design light with décor fan. We are unleasing a new combined market segment as an aggregator.

How was the demand from interior designers and home decor companies PAN India? What’re your expectations?

We have been successfully selling our previous model of POAL series which has no fan provision in order to analyze the market response. We have noticed that out of 10 interested customers and interior designers, 8 could not opt for us due to the unavailability of fan provision. Especially customers from Kolkata and Chennai being really specific about fan provision in MyCeiling products. Fan been need where having MyCeiling light panels was more of a secondary requirement. Now with FanPRO, we are sure to penetrate deeper in the market where every house will choose 1 to 3 units of FanPRO for their living room, kids room (with kids special designs) and bedrooms. It can also be used for dining and kitchen area.

What are the next product launches and new up-gradation which will highlight MyCeiling in the market?

FanPRO is our game changer model as it is going to meet the long-awaited need of people. The next important launch would be our IoT based product with home automation solution for complete house and it will blow the market of home automation like a storm. The 3D surface ceiling is an upcoming model which will boost our sales and reach out to most of the homes, especially those who always want to break the traditional monotony of gypsum false ceiling design where its flat 2D. We will share more details in the coming months.

What are the Future plans and strategies? 

In order to launch our home automation systems, acquire the market, own market place and boost our sales, inventory, team & expansion we have started pitching for fundraising. International patent filing is separate in every country and for our many patents, it’s going to be a costly thing that a startup cant plan to afford from its traditional growth.  As much we would invest In securing our patents, results would come with 100 times higher returns for sure as it secures our future global market.

What is the Vision of the company?

Every house owner should be able to enjoy affordable home automation where the technology should not be limited just to the rich who are willing to spend lakhs on it. “space-saving, clutter-free, multifunctional, hassle-free and aesthetically appealing” — these are the core when we try to give shape to the tech-driven products (even for non-tech once).

How the world has shrunk in smartphone and become a basic need which is affordable, we are doing the same to your complete homes!
